TRENCHES IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR

Warm up – An interactive matching exercise

Some expressions in the audio extract characterize well the first impressions and emotions felt by a soldier that has just got to the trench.

In this activity, before listening to the extract students are requested to match these expressions to their definition.

In order to have the students practice some speaking and to participate, the teacher gives to each student two pieces of paper, one of them containing an expression, and the other the definition of a different expression. If there are more than 20 students, some of them will receive only an expression or a definition.

A couple of students are called to the IWB where the teacher has prepared 40 text boxes containing the expressions and the definitions, that are disposed on the board in a scrambled order.

Then the teacher asks the students to read in turn the definitions. The student who hold the corresponding expression have to raise his/her hand and read it aloud. The students working to the IWB put together the expression and its definition by dragging them to the centre of the board.

At the end, the teacher saves the IWB page, that subsequently will be shared to the students by Dropbox or email.
