1963 wurden die Menschen in Longarone in Norditalien von einer Tragödie heimgesucht. Ein Bergsturz löste eine Flutwelle in einem neu errichteten Stausee aus, welche die Staumauer überwand und das dahinter liegende Tal verwüstete. Warnungen von Geologen waren zuvor ignoriert worden, ebenso die Anzeichen am Hang des Berges, die auf einen extremen Bergsturz hinwiesen. 2000 Menschen starben bei dieser Katastrophe. Aber welche Kaskade von Ereignissen führte zu diesem Unglück? War die Katastrophe menschengemacht?

The 2014 La Habra earthquake: Teaching Risk and Resilience in Southern California with Citizen Science

This exercise uses the example of the March 28, 2014 M5.1 La Habra earthquake to teach about earthquake risk and resilience in southern California. Students will examine seismic waveforms recording during the earthquake, as well as read reports from scientific agencies and news outlets to answer basic questions regarding earthquake risk and resilience.

This NOAA visualization on YouTube shows the seasonal variations in sea surface temperatures and ice cover from 1985 to 2007. The visualization is based on data collected by NOAA polar-orbiting satellites. El NiÃo and La NiÃa are easily identified, as are the trends in decreasing polar sea ice.

This two-part lesson on 'The Amazing Adaptations of Earth’s Organisms' that aligns with Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills Standards for 4-5th Grade Science and Art. It includes a first lesson where students read a scientific article from Frontiers for Young Minds, then work in expert teams to summarize the article using the jigsaw strategy. Then, in a second lesson, students learn about earth's biomes and a broader range of adaptations of organisms to various environmental challenges, then draw and describe their own organism with "superpower adaptations".
