Description:
This is the online, interactive version of OpenIntro's Advanced High School Statistics (https://www.openintro.org/book/ahss/). It was developed by Emiliano Vega and Ralf Youtz of Portland Community College using PreTeXt.
We hope readers will take away three ideas from this book in addition to forming a foundation of statistical thinking and methods:
1. Statistics is an applied field with a wide range of practical applications.
2. You don't have to be a math guru to learn from real, interesting data.
3. Data are messy, and statistical tools are imperfect. But, when you understand the strengths and weaknesses of these tools, you can use them to learn about the real world.

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:
"Gq protein-coupled receptors (GqPCRs) are membrane bound proteins that transmit signals from outside the cell to internal signaling pathways. One of these pathways is the PI3K/AKT pathway, which plays roles in cellular proliferation, survival, metabolism, and differentiation. PI3K/AKT dysregulation is also often implicated in cancers. A previous study determined that activating GqPCRs in certain cells inactivated AKT, which led to a specific type of cell death, JNK-dependent apoptosis. This unique signal seems to play an important role in physiological and pathological events like pituitary development and cardiac hypertrophy. Now, a new study determined that the mechanism of this AKT inactivation relies on another signaling-related protein, PP2A. When the GqPCRs are not activated, a fraction of PP2A "c" subunit is in a dimer complex with another protein, IGBP1 and they are bound to the p85 subunit of PI3K, causing its activation..."
The rest of the transcript, along with a link to the research itself, is available on the resource itself.

Today we're going to continue our discussion of statistical models by showing how we can find if there are differences between multiple groups using a collection of models called ANOVA. ANOVA, which stands for Analysis of Variance is similar to regression (which we discussed in episode 32), but allows us to compare three or more groups for statistical significance.

Do you think a red minivan would be more expensive than a beige one? Now what if the car was something sportier like a corvette? Last week we introduced the ANOVA model which allows us to compare measurements of more than two groups, and today we’re going to show you how it can be applied to look at data that belong to multiple groups that overlap and interact. Most things after all can be grouped in many different ways - like a car has a make, model, and color - so if we wanted to try to predict the price of a car, it’d be especially helpful to know how those different variables interact with one another.

This textbook introduces students to the application methods of control charts to improve quality in health care. The textbook is written to be accessible to any student in the areas of health information management, health care informatics, and health care industrial engineering. Having a basic background in statistics would be beneficial, but such training is not a prerequisite to understanding how to apply the techniques discussed here. Several How-To sections are included to demonstrate the implementation of the given control charts using software such as Minitab and Excel. Additionally, samples of a Python code are included and can directly be accessed in a Jupyter Notebook at https://github.com/JeromeNN/Applications-Control-Charts-Quality-Improvement-Health-Care

This book was created to support Project 677 in APSC 100 in the Faculty of Engineering at Queen’s University during the winter term of 2019, and is being updated and expanded to support Project 725 in Winter 2021. It provides a publicly visible collection of information that will help with this design project. Use of these resources elsewhere under the CC license is encouraged, but not supported. The contents of this book will grow and change over the term. Please fell free to add your comments or questions in any of the sections and I will try to address them.
The resources in this book are not comprehensive and are only intended to provide a starting point to explore design options. In particular, there will be many examples illustrated by single products that are not the only, or even the best solutions for a particular application. You will need to go well beyond the contents of this book to make your independent design decisions.
The models used for building heat transfer are very much simplified for an introduction to the ideas and should be used cautiously. Design of actual building systems should be undertaken in much greater detail. The target here is to use models that don’t require you to learn any new physics.
The secondary reason this book exists is to give me some practice using PressBooks to develop Open Educational Resources (OER). Some of the files that are linked from this book are on Google Drive, and some are on GitHub.

Poor research reporting is a major contributing factor to low study reproducibility, …
Poor research reporting is a major contributing factor to low study reproducibility, financial and animal waste. The ARRIVE (Animal Research: Reporting of In Vivo Experiments) guidelines were developed to improve reporting quality and many journals support these guidelines. The influence of this support is unknown. We hypothesized that papers published in journals supporting the ARRIVE guidelines would show improved reporting compared with those in non-supporting journals. In a retrospective, observational cohort study, papers from 5 ARRIVE supporting (SUPP) and 2 non-supporting (nonSUPP) journals, published before (2009) and 5 years after (2015) the ARRIVE guidelines, were selected. Adherence to the ARRIVE checklist of 20 items was independently evaluated by two reviewers and items assessed as fully, partially or not reported. Mean percentages of items reported were compared between journal types and years with an unequal variance t-test. Individual items and sub-items were compared with a chi-square test. From an initial cohort of 956, 236 papers were included: 120 from 2009 (SUPP; n = 52, nonSUPP; n = 68), 116 from 2015 (SUPP; n = 61, nonSUPP; n = 55). The percentage of fully reported items was similar between journal types in 2009 (SUPP: 55.3 ± 11.5% [SD]; nonSUPP: 51.8 ± 9.0%; p = 0.07, 95% CI of mean difference -0.3–7.3%) and 2015 (SUPP: 60.5 ± 11.2%; nonSUPP; 60.2 ± 10.0%; p = 0.89, 95%CI -3.6–4.2%). The small increase in fully reported items between years was similar for both journal types (p = 0.09, 95% CI -0.5–4.3%). No paper fully reported 100% of items on the ARRIVE checklist and measures associated with bias were poorly reported. These results suggest that journal support for the ARRIVE guidelines has not resulted in a meaningful improvement in reporting quality, contributing to ongoing waste in animal research.

Edwin Hubble examined the spectra of many galaxies, looking for the red (longer wavelengths) or blue (shorter wavelengths) shifts in the spectra, indicating relative motion. To his surprise, not only did all of the galaxies appear to be moving, but all were moving away from us, no matter the direction of the galaxy. In addition, he found most galaxies exhibited a redshift, and the redshift was larger the further it was from our galaxy.Distant Nature: Astronomy Exercises 2016 by Stephen Tuttle under license "Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike".
