This book has been developed with over a decade of classroom use in both face-to-face and online classes at Pittsburg State University. The goal was to create a resource to introduce students to the important elements that go into financial decision making which applies to corporations and their own personal lives in a simple framework. Whether it is learning about time value of money, bonds, capital budgeting or retirement planning, this book should make that process as straight-forward as possible. With the explosion of Open Educational Resource materials over the past few years, we saw this as a tool that could be made available to faculty as a launching point for their courses. Using a Creative Commons license that allows users to modify it to their needs with their own additions or through adding other resources, it is intended as not the final product, but the starting point. We hope that this process will keep the material current and flexible enough to help students gain not only a better grasp of finance, but also an interest in the field.

This text is an adaption of Business Communication for Success, an open textbook produced by the University of Minnesota Libraries Publishing in 2015.
Chapters 9, 18, and 20 of Business Communication for Success: GVSU Edition were revised and rewritten by student authors in 2017, as part of a course in the Writing Department at Grand Valley State University. All other chapters retain the content and formatting of previous editions.

Business Communication for Success is adapted from a work produced by a publisher who has requested that they and the original author not receive attribution. This adapted edition is produced by the University of Minnesota Libraries Publishing through the eLearning Support Initiative.

"Cancer cell growth depends on the production of new blood vessels by tumor endothelial cells in a process called angiogenesis. But the growing cancer cells produce large amounts of lactic acid as a byproduct of glucose breakdown. How tumor endothelial cells are able to survive in this toxic environment is unclear. In a recent study, researchers sought to uncover the mechanism of tumor endothelial cell survival in a lactic acid-rich tumor microenvironment. Using genetics and proteomics, they compared the RNA and protein levels of pH-regulating proteins in tumor endothelial cells to those in normal endothelial cells. They found that carbonic anhydrase 2 (CAII), an important pH regulator, was elevated in tumor endothelial cells, which was induced through the VEGF signaling pathway. Blocking CAII in tumor endothelial cells decreased cell survival in lactic acid conditions, and treating tumor-bearing mice with a CAII inhibitor had decreased lung metastasis..."

Long Description: Chemistry, Life the Universe and Everything (CLUE) is a transformed general chemistry curriculum, developed by an interdisciplinary team of a chemist and a molecular biologist, that aims to bring about evidence-based change in general chemistry. General Chemistry is a gateway course for many students intending on careers in scientific, engineering, and health care-related disciplines. While there have been many attempts to improve the outcomes for these students, little has changed over the past 60 years. Recent transformation efforts have focused primarily on incorporating student engagement techniques into the course, rather than considering what it is that is important for students to learn. CLUE is different. CLUE was developed using a design research approach that focuses on scaffolded progressions around four core ideas: structure and properties, bonding and interactions, energy, and change and stability. The course emphasizes causal mechanistic reasoning in order to help students move beyond knowing that, to knowing how and knowing why chemical phenomena occur.
