Long Description:
This guide is designed to support health and social care researchers and practitioners to integrate qualitative research into the evidence base of health and social care research. Qualitative research designs are diverse and each design has a different focus that will inform the approach undertaken and the results that are generated. The aim is to move beyond the “what” of qualitative research to the “how”, by (1) outlining key qualitative research designs for health and social care research – descriptive, phenomenology, action research, case study, ethnography, and grounded theory; (2) a decision tool of how to select the appropriate design based on a guiding prompting question, the research question and available resources, time and expertise; (3) an overview of mixed methods research and qualitative research in evaluation studies; (4) a practical guide to data collection and analysis; (5) providing examples of qualitative research to illustrate the scope and opportunities; and (6) tips on communicating qualitative research.

"The intestinal tract is home to a variety of microbes that live in a delicate balance with their host. Although this symbiosis is well-studied for bacteria, gut fungi (mycobiota) are often neglected due to their lower abundance in the gut microbiome. While fungi are traditionally investigated using culture-dependent methods, next-generation sequencing has allowed for more in-depth understanding. Fungi may colonize the gut as soon as birth, and the gut mycobiota can be affected by many factors throughout life, such as the environment, diet and nutrition, and the seasons. Gut fungi regulate many physiological functions in their hosts, including metabolism, control of aging, and disease progression. Immune homeostasis, in particular, is linked to gut mycobiota, and fungi can affect both innate and adaptive immune responses in the gut. Gut mycobiota have also been linked with intestinal diseases, and imbalanced fungal community composition can alter intestinal homeostasis..."

In this analysis and discussion activity, research concerning the health effects of vitamin E is used as a case study to help students understand why different research studies may find seemingly opposite results. Students learn useful approaches for evaluating and synthesizing conflicting research results, with a major focus on understanding the strengths and weaknesses of different types of studies (laboratory experiments, observational studies, and clinical trials). Students also learn that the results of any single study should be interpreted with caution, since results of similar studies vary (due to random variation and differences in specific study characteristics).

Infectious diseases have a specific, ethiological cause, e.g. a microbe such as tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. However, most people exposed to TB does not develop the disease. What determines this may be poverty, weakening of the person by other diseases or smoking and alcohol. So-called life-style diseases are (also) determined by the way you live, and include prevalent non-communicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardio-vascular diseases, but besides of risk factors such as smoking and drinking or over-eating, the living conditions matter equally and sometimes more. The environment, climate changes, urbanization, socio-economic factors all impact health and disease. When an individual grows older, patterns of his/her diseases changes: the same applies when a society grows ‘older’.
