An introduction to different kinds of knives used the kitchen, appropriate & safe knife handling, & practicing of basic knife cuts.

This OER La Leyenda del Coquí was created by Marcy Fuentes as part of the 2024 World Language OER Summer work and training. Educators worked with Chrystal Liu, Nick Ziegler and Dorann Avey to create OER Learning Plans and materials. The attached Lesson Plan is designed for 9 - 12 World Language Arts teachers for Novice High to Intermediate Learners of Spanish. Students will analyze and evaluate the elements of literary text, build background knowledge to clarify text and deepen understanding, and use relevant evidence from a variety of sources to assist in analysis and reflection of complex text. This Lesson Plan addresses the following NDE World Language Standard(s): NE WL 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 5.1 It is expected that this Lesson Plan will take students 2-4 days to complete.
In this lesson, students explore the impact of climate change on small-scale fishing communities and best practices for building resilience.
Step 1 - Inquire: Students interpret infographics, play a game, and share what they know about the impact of climate change on fishing.
Step 2 - Investigate: Students deepen their understanding of sustainable small-scale fishing through a matching exercise and a tic-tac-toe research activity.
Step 3 - Inspire: Students create a mural to educate others about the importance of supporting sustainable, small-scale fishing.
SYNOPSIS: This lesson explores ways to reduce carbon emissions through the reduction of disposable plastics in daily routines.
SCIENTIST NOTES: We have a problem with plastics; they are everywhere. And they are bad for the climate and our health. This lesson shows how some countries are trying to reduce the use of plastics. This lesson passed our scientific review process.

-Students are exposed to ways that Latin American countries are leading the way in solving the plastics problem.
-The lesson engages students with two games, Quizlet live and Kahoot.
-The vocabulary related to plastic items is scaffolded so that students can independently navigate the Spanish-language websites and complete the final project with confidence.
ADDITIONAL PREREQUISITES:
-The activities presume novice-high Spanish-language proficiency.
-Students should be familiar with reflexive verbs in the present tense, verbs like gustar to express opinions, and daily routine vocabulary.
-To prepare to teach this lesson, teachers can learn about plastics and recycling.
-This NPR/Frontline report from 2020 and this in-depth Greenpeace España report analyze the limits of recycling as a solution to the plastic problem.
-Bioplastics are made from natural ingredients such as corn. This flier, produced by Break Free From Plastic, provides data about the drawbacks of this solution.
DIFFERENTIATION:
-The lesson can be shortened by eliminating the vocabulary activities in the Inquire section or eliminating either Parte 1 or Parte 2 in the Inspire section.
-The lesson can be extended for advanced students by including supplemental reading and listening activities.
-Students can explore the 2024 international treaty on plastics using this summary in Spanish of the 22 foundational points.
-This RTVE report "La Unión Europea dice adiós al plástico de un solo uso" includes text and a short video.
-Recicladores de base are an important part of the recycling process in many countries. Marce La Recicladora from Colombia has an informative YouTube channel.

This series of lessons includes lectures and activities to demonstrate judging the condition of soil for a given area of land, the qualities of that soil, and identifying management actions to correct the condition if needed.
This plan is designed for grade 12 English Language Arts students. Students will analyze and evaluate the elements of literary text, build background knowledge to clarify text and deepen understanding, and use relevant evidence from a variety of sources to assist in analysis and reflection of complex text. Students will then write their own poem reflecting a social issue in their time. This plan addresses the following NDE Standard: NE LA 12.1.6.l, NE LA 12.1.6.g and NE LA 12.2.2a
Students will create a poster project in groups of 3-4 about an assigned historical leader. Students should show knowledge of who this person was (when/where they lived) and several of their leadership accomplishments. Students will present their knowledge to the rest of the class so that they too may learn about a different leader than the one they were assigned.
This series of lessons will teach all of the key features in Tinkercad, a free, web-based 3D design platform. When you have finished the lessons you will have a comprehensive knowledge of how to design/draw in 3D. After that all you need is practice to improve your skills.

Would you know how to navigate the French Metro to get from point A to point B? This activity relates to the theme of directions, navigation. Students will use their prior knowledge of vocabulary related to this theme, as well as the imperative form of verbs. Also, most likely students have all experienced being lost in a new city - it is less likely now because of cell phones and satellite maps. However, taking the wrong subway train, going in the wrong direction in a street can still happen regardless of cell phone availability. This activity teaches students how to ask and give directions in the imperative form.

In this lesson, students closely examine Dickinson's poem "There's a certain slant of light" in order to understand her craft. Students explore different components of Dickinson's poetry and then practice their own critical and poetry writing skills in an emulation exercise. Finally, in the spirit of Dickinson's correspondences, students will exchange their poems and offer informed critiques of each others' work.
