This task compares the usefulness of different forms of a quadratic expression. Students have to choose which form most easily provides information about the maximum value, the zeros and the vertical intercept of a quadratic expression in the context of a real world situation. Rather than just manipulating one form into the other, students can make sense out of the structure of the expressions.

This seminar will introduce you to various properties that are used to simplify expressions containing exponents. You will learn how to multiply and divide expressions containing exponents, and you will also learn what happens when a base is raised to a power of zero. You will have to extend your knowledge of an exponent as an indicator of how many factors of a base must be multiplied, and apply it to combining more than one exponential expression using various operations.  The Quadratics module is divided into 4 parts, including (1) solving by factoringm, (2) solving using the square root property and completing the square, (3) solving using the quadratic formula, and (4) solving by graphing. The goal is for students to recognize the strategies for solving quadratics, and even higher degree functions that can employ the same strategies. For each strategy there is a video page and then a practice homework page. The video pages include printable word documents that are the notes. This is a project that generally follows the PBL framework that can be used to help students master the concept of qudratics in their study of intermediate algebra. Specifically, it was designed to help students master the concept of quadratic functions, equations, and inequalities, including the parts of both standard & vertex equations, as well as how to identify the domain & range of a quadratic function; how to apply quadratics as the square of binomials; how to make decisions about a specific quadratic problem or application relative to the significance of the vertex and roots; and how to transform a quadratic by manipulating its parent equation. Note that the project was designed and delivered per the North Carolina Math 2 curriculum and it can be customized to meet your own specific curriculum needs and resources.
