Code will be written to use the micro:bit’s thermometer to collect data which is then stored daily in a CSV file and later used to make statistical calculations and a box-and-whisker plot.

"Recent years have seen the rapid global emergence of the "gig economy". Today’s technology has made it easier than ever to take on platform-enabled jobs on the side or even full-time, whether that’s renting out your home, delivering food, or giving others a lift. But that, researchers from Ireland say, could be problematic. In a new article published in the Human Resource Management Journal, they discuss “gig work” as another chapter in an all-too-familiar story: how technology has outpaced our capacity to fully consider its effects on humans. As the gig economy continues to grow, gig workers themselves could be growing more distant from the platforms that provide at least some portion of their livelihood. While the work may offer the flexibility many seek, there’s clear cause for concern over the well-being of workers, signaling an urgent need for dedicated research. Part of the problem lies in how gig work is discussed..."

Lesson 1 introduces students to the blow fly's life cycle and the accumulated degree hour (ADH) used by forensic entomologists for estimating the time of death. Lesson 2 introduces Dr. Krinsky's entomological work in solving a murder case in 1986. Students access several primary-source documents related to Dr. Krinsky's entomological work. Both lessons help students expand their understanding of a forensic entomologist's work and appreciate how scientists account for environmental/variable factors in forming a conclusion in a scientific study.

Younger school age period ( 7-11 years ) has a significant impact on human life as it both leaves permanent marks and shapes the future life of an individual. Children have a strong desire and motivation to explore the world they live in. The feeling of wonder constitutes the source of their learning motivations. It is thought that this project will comprise a basis and give different ideas for the development of child-centered disaster management plans which includes what to do before, during and after disasters. By the project, in which field screening method was used, younger school age children’s levels of the knowledge and awareness about natural disasters were studied and analyzed. This project was carried out for children to learn about natural disasters, to overcome the fear of natural disasters, and to realize that precautions will save their life and they are not likely to get harm if the necessary precautions are taken. It was carried out with 41 partner schools from 4 countries. 750 students participated in the project. First of all, a pre-questionnaire was applied to the students, and their level of knowledge about natural disasters was measured. Together with the partner school teachers, the deficiencies were determined by a questionnaire applied to the schools and a common plan was prepared as it was aimed to reach all the students. Technological and traditional methods have been blended to create permanent learning for the students and their surrondings to learn the emergency numbers. Different activities have been designed that will attract students attention about the common worlwide disasters, and necessary environments for learning by practising&experience have been created. The results of teacher, parent and student questionnaires carried out after field excursion&observation activities were compared with the pre-questionnaire results.Having analysed the questionnaires in which the Likert scale was used, it was seen that the goals were reached.

Professor Ingunn Maria S. Engebretsen, CIH, University of Bergen

Engebretsen explains that the Goal is ambitious, embracing everything that is “non-communicable”, it means everything that is not infectious. Her own research interests include diseases relating to nutrition and mental health. She noted that malnutrition, in particular, is a common factor for many poor health conditions.

Engebretsen highlighted a number of established theories (Forsdahl, Barker, Brenner) and newer theories linking genetics, epigenetics, environment and health, to argue that a lifestyle approach is needed to best tackle non-communicable diseases. She also mentioned how many of these diseases have significant socio-economic effects on society and many impact the health of future generations.

Finally, Engebretsen presented information about the importance of mental health, highlighting that this is a significant factor in disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for young people (aged 15-24).

GEM4 Vision
GEM4 has brought together researchers and professionals in major institutions across the globe with distinctly different, but complementary, expertise and facilities to address significant problems at the intersections of select topics of engineering, life sciences, technology, medicine and public health.
GEM4 creates new models for interactions across scientific disciplinary boundaries whereby problems spanning the range of fundamental science to clinical studies and public health can be addressed on a global scale through strategic international partnerships.
Through initial focus areas in cell and molecular biomechanics, and environmental health, in the context of select human diseases, GEM4 creates a global forum for the definition and exploration of grand challenges and scientific studies, for the cross-fertilization of ideas among engineers, life scientists and medical professionals, and for the development of novel educational tools.
GEM4 Activities
GEM4 enables the brokering of engineers, life scientists and medical professionals with shared facilities and joint students and post-doctoral fellows to tackle major problems in the context of human health and diseases that call for state-of-the-art experimental and computational tools in cell and molecular mechanics, biology and medicine. Broad examples of problems addressed include:

infectious diseases such as malaria,
cancer,
cardiovascular diseases,
biomechanical origins of inflammation.

In each of these areas, the initial emphasis has included (but will not be limited to) molecular, subcellular and cellular mechanics applied to biomedicine, where a single investigator or institution is not likely to have the full spectrum of expertise, infrastructure or resources available to cover fundamental molecular science all the way to clinical studies and societal implications. Currently, twelve institutions in North America, Europe and Asia participate in this effort as Core institutions, focusing on mechanistic studies, as well as novel methods for diagnostics, vaccines or drug development and delivery.
Funds have been raised to provide a structure for coordinated studies from major organizations under the umbrella of GEM4. These funds are being used for:

organization of major symposia/conferences specifically targeted at the theme areas of the initiative,
training grants for student fellowships for the partner institutions,
summer schools to develop teaching materials,
the exchange of students and researchers,
operations of a central secretariat for handling the administrative and infrastructure details for such interactions,
maintenance of a web site for dissemination of information.
