The design for this Canvas course was adapted from the Advancing Coherent and Equitable Systems of Science Education: Resource D developed by Phil Bell and Deb Morrison.  (Links to an external site.) Participants build their 3D assessment design capacity by following a step-by-step process using supporting tools to design formative assessment items—before piloting them in their classrooms. The approaches learned in this course can be used with any science curricula, at any grade level, and across all domains of science and engineering.

Current Event in Astronomy

In an effort to raise awareness of astronomical developments, I have students search newspapers or online for any recent astronomical-related story and provide a photo and a short summary of the article including why they think it is important and I ask them to identify specially which chapter of the textbook deals with their story. I do this early in the semester as a way of getting students to become more familiar with the textbook and to try to get them to become lifelong learners and be in the habit of looking for current events related to astronomy.

In this paper, literature will be reviewed related to incorporating game-based learning into classrooms of all ages. The main topic of this research was two-sided. First, to focus on the effectiveness of game-based learning with improved learning outcomes, enhanced motivation and engagement among students and the development of important skills. Second, the process that should be taken by gaming developers so that virtual games serve a purpose in an educational setting instead of just being given to students as a means to occupy their time. During the analysis of this research, it became clear that many of these research objectives have been deeply looked into in various studies. Game-based learning clearly has a place in educational settings and has proven to have many beneficial effects among students. However, the decisiveness of the research became fragmented as so many different games, ages, settings, etc. were considered across the various literature.
