The Assistive Technology in the Schools Course aims to to familiarize educators and parents with assistive technology devices and services, and provide a foundational understanding of what it means to consider, assess, and implement assistive technology (AT) with students to remove learning barriers. This course includes four modules: Introduction to Assistive Technology,      AT Consideration, AT Assessment, and AT Implementation.  This first module, Introduction to Assistive Technology, highlights the difference between accessible technology and assistive technology. This module explores examples of how assistive technology devices and services can help reduce learning barriers for students with disabilities across learning environments. Module Objective:Participants will be able to understand and describe inclusive technology and the difference between accessible educational material(AEM), accessible technology, and assistive technology(AT). Participants will be able to identify 3 examples of assistive technology devices/tools that have the potential to remove learning barriers for students.Participants will be able to identify 2 examples of assistive technology services within the education system.

The engineering design process involves many steps. Not only must an engineer be able to devise a solution to a problem, he or she must also be ready to test and evaluate that solution to reach the best result. To successfully complete the design process, an engineer must be able to identify design flaws and learn from his or her mistakes. In this video segment adapted from ZOOM, learn about the design process as cast members create automatic door openers that enable them to open their bedroom doors while lying on their beds. For grades 3-8.

Students are introduced to the concept of engineering biological organisms and studying their growth to be able to identify periods of fast and slow growth. They learn that bacteria are found everywhere, including on the surfaces of our hands. Student groups study three different conditions under which bacteria are found and compare the growth of the individual bacteria from each source. In addition to monitoring the quantity of bacteria from differ conditions, they record the growth of bacteria over time, which is an excellent tool to study binary fission and the reproduction of unicellular organisms.

In this quick and simple activity, learners explore how the distribution of the mass of an object determines the position of its center of gravity, its angular momentum, and your ability to balance it. Learners discover it is easier to balance a wooden dowel on the tip of their fingers when a lump of clay is near the top of the stick. Use this activity to introduce learners to rotational inertia.

Students follow the steps of the engineering design process as they design and construct balloons for aerial surveillance. After their first attempts to create balloons, they are given the associated Estimating Buoyancy lesson to learn about volume, buoyancy and density to help them iterate more successful balloon designs.Applying their newfound knowledge, the young engineers build and test balloons that fly carrying small flip cameras that capture aerial images of their school. Students use the aerial footage to draw maps and estimate areas.

Events such as conferences, festivals, annual meetings, award ceremonies, fundraisers and seminars are an important part of the lives of many people including persons with disabilities and the elderly. Thus, it is important to ensure that such events are planned and organized in an accessible and inclusive manner to meet the needs of all visitors and participants.
This document aims to help organizations to make events more digitally accessible for persons with disabilities who may be attending as presenters, participants, or sponsors. It provides guidance on how to ensure ICT Accessibility before, during and after the event, offering a set of best practices adopted internationally and locally with reference to the topics outlined in the CPRD policy framework that will open up a section of a potential market that is often overlooked and help to meet existing legal responsibilities of the organizations from an ICT perspective.
