Practical tips for incorporating DEI into your course materials

This 30-minute workshop builds off understanding the importance of incorporating DEI into your course materials and takes a deep dive into how to do it. Explore how to decolonize your syllabus, what a diversity statement is, why you might include one in your syllabus and see examples of existing diversity statements. Explore concrete ways to include diverse representation in the materials you’re creating for your classroom and/or in materials you’re adopting with an open license.

You’ll walk away with a curated list of recommended readings, places to find openly licensed images, and examples of course materials where DEI components have been successfully integrated. Presented by Amanda Larson, affordable learning instructional consultant at The Ohio State University.

Equity and Open Education Faculty Panel

Faculty often assume that their course is more equitable when they adopt affordable materials, and it is true that affordable materials remove a significant barrier to success. However, an open license does not ensure that the course materials or course design are inclusive of the diverse students in our classrooms. Jen Klaudinyi, Faculty Librarian at Portland Community College, discusses her design of the Equity and Open Education Faculty Cohort professional development course.

Towards Openness that Promotes Social Justice with Maha Bali

Part of Open Education Week 2022 webinar series. In this presentation, Dr. Maha Bali shares different perspectives on the design and practice of open education that promotes social justice. Dr. Bali encourages participants to reflect on their own educational practices and to evaluate the assumption that openness inherently promotes social justice. Participants collaboratively explore how to strengthen the social justice orientation of open course materials and practices in order to promote social justice for diverse communities and groups.

Representing the Underrepresented: Adding Culturally Responsive and Anti-Racist Content to Your Course Materials and OERs

Presented by Cara Lee and Jess Brooks from Portland Community College, this interactive presentation will share concrete examples of diverse representation in a math class for liberal arts using open educational resources (OER), including biographies, names, pronouns and racial context. While the examples were designed for a math class, these tactics can be applied to any subject area.

Student Panel on Open Educational Resources

Students are often at the center of what motivates faculty and institutions to dedicate resources to promote open education and affordable textbooks. A panel of Oregon community college and university students shared their experiences and advice regarding textbook choices, facilitated by Maggie Gates, Oregon Student Association Legislative Director. Maggie was joined by panelists Rebekah Kenney, Southern Oregon University; Elizabeth Braatz, Western Oregon University; and Dylan DeLoe, Blue Mountain Community College.
