Beginning Level Housing Stories for Adult ELLs
These materials were created for beginning level adult learners who are working on word recognition and developing reading fluency. The stories and accompanying activities were designed to be used throughout an entire week of classroom instruction to provide learners with repetition and scaffolded instruction. The two stories center around a Somali family that is dissatisfied with their current housing situation and are looking for a new apartment. The vocabulary introduced includes rooms and features found in housing, and basic forms of present tense verbs.
Both stories include extensive follow-up activities that can be utilized to expand upon the vocabulary and ideas introduced in the stories, and encourage learners to share about their own experiences with housing.
Types of additional activities include:
Gap-Fills (Multi-Level)
Word Scrambles
Sentence Scrambles
Bar Graphs
