Buying & Selling

Author Introduction

Lesson Plan

Date:           6/22/16                          Grade Level:      2nd

Concept:

Using money to buy and sell.

Objectives:

Given a recording ledger and money, paired students will buy/sell items with 90% accuracy.

Introduction:

Real world application. I will open a discussion with students what they have observed when they see adults buying things at stores with cash. How do adults count it out? What does the cashier say when they give money back? What happens if the adult doesn’t have enough cash?

Vocabulary:

Buy(er), Sell(er), Decimal, Dollar Sign, Cent Sign, Dollar, Quarter, Dime, Nickel, Penny, Ledger, Price, and Transaction.

Body of Lesson:

1.     After the introduction, I will explain the lesson in a step-by-step fashion including a short explanation and demonstration of how to use a simple ledger. Students will have a t chart on a paper, one side will say “what I have” while the other will say “what I got”. (See attached example at bottom of document.)

2.     Students will be paired according to abilities in high/low groups of two. (Some students may have very little experience while others have already done similar activities with parents.)

3.     Half the groups in the class will then become “sellers” while the other half will become “buyers”. Sellers will be given a group of predetermined and priced objects from within the classroom. Buyers will be given a bag containing money and asked to quickly count it out.

4.     Students will then begin buying and selling items with each other after each “transaction” students will record what happened on their ledger.

5.     When each group has successfully bought or sold everything given we will have a short class discussion to see how things are going. What did you notice about selling? What did you notice about buying? Did the ledger help you remember how much money you had?

6.     After the discussion the buyers (which now have objects to sell) will become the sellers and sellers will become buyers.

7.     When the students have successfully completed the activity I will ask questions to gauge understanding of the lesson. When you were a buyer what were you doing? What were you doing as a seller? Why did I have you fill out the ledger? What happened if you accidently made a mistake on the ledger?

8.     Students will then hand in ledgers for grading and observation on my part.

Accommodations/Modifications:

ELL students should need only minimal translation help with this assignment, mainly with the ledger and explanation of instructions. Since the activity is tactile, ELL students could complete it with minimal help. Pairing students high/low will help those students who are in SPED resource. Additionally I would watch those groups with particularly low students to ensure the high student didn’t “take charge”. I would suggest to students that they trade making the transaction and writing in the ledger.

Multiple Intelligence(s) Addressed:

Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, Interpersonal, Linguistic, Logical

Assessment:

The formative assessment will take place during the multiple discussions in the lesson. I will use the worksheet handed in at the end of the lesson as a summative assessment and use it to determine if the student met the 90% benchmark mentioned in my objective.
