Immigration and the Community
Driving Question: How has immigration enriched our community?
When asked this question a student is required to think of what sort of immigrants came to their community, and what they brought with them that has enriched the community. To accomplish this, they will need to research the different immigrants that can be found in their community.
The question allows students to look at their community in a different way they normally would. The students will view how things that they enjoy might not be present without the immigration of people.
For students to answer this question, they will have to think first what sort of immigrants are a part of their community. They also need to think about what things might have come from immigrants that they might not have unless that particular group of immigrants immigrated. To accomplish this, they will have to do a little research into the different cultures that are present in their community.
2. Grabber: School House Rock video on immigration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZQl6XBo64M
The video is a fun interactive what to get students interested in immigration. After watching the video, they might ask if everyone is from somewhere else and wonder about their ancestors.
The purpose of the video particularly though is just to get them interested in the topic of immigration and help them to understand that we are all a mix of some ethnicity.
The video shows that the United States are made up mostly immigrants. That everyone is welcome here.
The video should be used as an introduction to the topic of immigration and the role that it played in the United States. The video is a fun interactive way to get students excited about learning more about immigration.
3) Students will form groups of 3-4 students and give a 5-10 minute presentation on something that is found in the community due to the immigration of people to the state.
The activity allows the students to explore some of the different cultures as well as the history of something found in the community because of immigrates.
The groups of students will get to present the knowledge that they have learned about immigration and how it affected their community.
Since they will be working in groups, it is a great team building exercise.
