Service Learning Environment
In this service learning project, students will be researching the outside environment and looking at how they affect the world. This addresses the standard NGSS.4.ESS2.1- make observations and measurements to provide information on the world.
Driving Question
Our question, “How do our actions affect the environment, and are there any ways we can change it?” allows the students to analyze their own actions in their everyday lives and look at how those actions are changing and affecting the environment. The students will then be able to evaluate their own those changes and will look at possible ways to stop or continue their actions based on the positive or negative affects it has on the environment. Presenting the information after their discoveries will allow the other students to explore the other ways in which the environment is affected in ways that they did not realize themselves. Our question will guide students to start thinking about the global climate change that is going on and it will lead them in the right direction for their discoveries.
The students will discover both the different ways that their actions affect the environment, and also they will learn what different ways they can prevent harming the environment. The students can also explore ways to make their actions help the environment. Based on what each student explores and researches they will find different answers. The question explores current issues such as global climate change and global warming. This is a big current issue in politics and social discussions. By exploring this question the students will learn how even their small actions will affect and change the environment in a positive and negative way. The students will be able to discover which of their actions affect the environment and how.
Grabber and Introduction
Our grabber will be an education video that shows the importance of helping our environment and what the students can do to help. We will show this video at the beginning of class so that the students can be hooked on what our DQ is and show them everything that we will be learning about for that lesson. Our grabber shows very high emotions situations and will be very relevant on what we are learning about.
Culminating Activity
Our Culminating Activity will be splitting up the class into smaller groups and having them work together to come up with an presentation on why they think that the environment is important and what our actions can do to help the environment. The groups will need to research information on the environment and come up with different ideas to why they think that our actions help. They must add pictures and videos to their presentation to show us the environment around us so that all of the students can visualize.
