Objective:

Students will be able to analyze historical images and use that analysis to organize them into the appropriate timeline of events.

Essential Question:

What context clues from images can be used to place pictures of events or places in their proper historical order?

Procedure:

  1. Ask students to divide into groups (or assign groups)
  2. Explain the importance of images to history and that to start understanding the events of the second World War, the class will be playing a game
  3. Distribute a set of images (ensuring that the images are in random order) to each group and explain the following rules:
  4. Task is to place the images in the correct order using only the images, groups must also explain their reasoning for why they put them in the order that they put them in
  5. Give them 10 minutes to do this with no ability to perform any research
  6. After the time is up or after a few attempts, allow the students the opportunity to research the images to find what the images are of
  7. Either after or while they research, have them now attempt to place them in the correct order

Product or Assessment:

Can range from students simply putting the images provided in the correct order and verbally explaining their reasoning to having students write their reasoning in the form a formal essay.

Accommodations:

Names of the events or location depicted in the images can be provided to help provide students with the scaffolding needed to complete the activity.
