Character Education Lesson 1
Grade Level: 5 and 6
Subject: Character Education Lesson 1 of an 18 lesson unit

Indiana Standard:
Counseling Competencies: Social/Emotional Development
Competency 1: Students will acquire and further develop the knowledge, attitudes and interpersonal skills to help them understand and respect self and others.
Competency 2: Students develop personal management and collaborative skills needed to become successful learners, responsible citizens, and productive workers.
Competency 3: Students will understand personal safety skills.
Description: Eight character traits are a part of this unit. Each lesson is a 30 minute lesson. There is a Google document on each trait that can be delivered directly to students. The student document contains items to read and videos to watch. The student document could be shown to an entire class or it could be viewed individually. Each character trait also has a teacher document titled as a “Discussion/Activity” for the same 30 minute class period the following day.
Objectives:
1. Students will understand that our class is beginning a unit on character education.
2. Students will discuss what character is, why it is important for people to have character, how friends influence their character choices, if it’s possible to be a perfect example of character, and more.
Procedure:
- Go over the curriculum guide documentwith students. (There will be a total of 18 lessons.)
- Hold a class discussion. Use the document titled “Character Discussion”.
Product or Assessment: class discussion
Accommodations:
1)Teachers would not necessarily have to go over the curriculum guide. It would at least be helpful to name the 8 character traits that the unit will focus upon.
2) Recommended questions for discussion could be left out or shortened if needed for time constraints.
Enrichment:
1) A coloring page for each of the character traits is available
2)Students could pick one of the topics discussed in class and write a few thoughts or a paragraph about it.
