Indiana Standard: S.8.6 Describe how the role of the mass media has changed over time and project what changes might occur in the future.

S.8.8 Investigate the consequences to society as a result of changes.

Objective: Students will analyze how the role of mass media has changed over time, looking specifically at sexual content. Students will also theorize the impact of desensitization and overexposure to media on American society.

Essential Question:Are we (American society) becoming “desensitized” and thus need more and more intense media?

Procedure: Students will view a powerpoint presentation on sexual content in mass media. Students will also read passages from songs and books containing sexual content.

Product or Assessment: To answer the question- “Are we (American Society) becoming “desensitized” and thus need more and more intense media?”- students will need to find an example (either print, audio, visual, or internet) that either supports their opinion yes- we are becoming desensitized, or no- over exposure is not desensitizing us. This can be a video link, a passage from a book, a snapshot of something on the internet, etc. Students will create something digital (paper, powerpoint, prezi, etc.) that illustrates their analysis and opinion.
