Common Core Standard:

Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including its relationship to the characters, setting, and plot; provide an objective summary of the text.

Description: Students will gain background knowledge of The Hobbit before beginning the novel.

Objective:

  • Students will use close reading skills to locate information within a text
  • Students will apply background knowledge of the Hobbit to their comprehension of the text
  • Students will apply vocabulary terms towards their understanding of the text

Essential Question:

  • What makes a hero?
  • What is heroism?
  • What are the stages of a hero’s journey?
  • What is fate?

Procedure:

  1. The teacher will present this Prezi over the historical background of The Hobbit while students take notes in a Google Doc.
  2. Next, the teacher will go over the Essential Questions of the unit and discuss possible responses.
  • What makes a hero?
  • What is heroism?
  • What are the stages of a hero’s journey?
  • What is fate?
  1. The class will read the first chapter of The Hobbit together, stopping frequently to discuss.
  2. The students will be assigned a vocabulary activity for homework.

Product or Assessment: Students will turn in their completed vocab sentences to the teacher via Google Classroom.

Accommodations: The vocab terms could be altered to accommodate a student.

Enrichment: Have the students research JRR Tolkien instead of showing them the Prezi
