Essay1 Guidelines

 

Choose ONE topic for Essay 1:

 

A&P:

 

“A&P” is considered to be a coming-of-age or epiphany story. What tensions are at play inside Sammy?  How does he age or change through this experience?

OR

Why does Sammy quit?  Is he rebelling against something?  If so, what?

 

OR

Greasy Lake:

How does the dirty, remote lake bring out behavior that the characters would not demonstrate elsewhere? Show how the setting relates to the inner life of the protagonist.

OR

 

 “Greasy Lake” presents a kind of “memento mori,” a moment of recognizing mortality.  What happens when the narrator has this recognition?

 

Essay should be 500 words, have a clear thesis (topic + opinion), a reason to support that opinion and textual evidence to illustrate your point. MLA formatt: 12pt Times New Roman, Double spaced and include in-text citations and a works cited page.
