Essay 3 Guidelines

Essay 3 Guideines

This assignment will be like an in-class essay where you will have a set time to write your paper Set your timer for 90 minutes and let's practice all we have been working on this semester:

·         Freewrite based on the Writing in the Zones exercise you just completed

·         Sketch an outline of your ideas

·         Make a claim about your research paper poem. Remember: THESIS = Topic + Your opinion (look in rectangle box on Zones exercise. You have a thesis there)

·         What is the reason you believe your thesis is true? Advance your argument (thesis) by starting your body paragraph with your reason your thesis is true (and avoid summarizing what the poem is about

·         Hunt for the best quote or quotes to support/illustrate the point you are making

·         For your conclusion, address the "So what? Who cares? Why does it matter?"

·         Give yourself permission to write a $hi#ty! draft

·         Save time to read your paper aloud with a pen in hand

·         Make sure you framed your quotes (review PPT on quoting if you don't know how to do this)

·         Make sure all quotes have in-text citations (for poetry, citations show line numbers, not page numbers. View PPT before writing this essay)

·         Don't forget a works cited page

·         Finally, the dental draft. Reread to correct grammar, spelling, formatting

·         Use self-edit worksheet to guide your revision process

Manage your time to complete this short writing assignment (only 500 words). Plan on prewriting for 20 minutes; create an outline and hunt for quotes for 10-15 minutes; write a rough draft for 30 - 40 minutes; make revisions, develop ideas, frame and cite quotes for 15 minutes; proofread for 5 to 10 minutes. (Rough estimates, but just to give you an idea for a plan).

You can do this in all one sitting or do half one day, sleep on it, and do half the next day. (You have that luxury in an online class ;)
