Indiana Standard:

9-10.W.5 Conduct short as well as more sustained research assignments and tasks to build knowledge about the research process and the topic under study. ● Formulate an inquiry question, and refine and narrow the focus as research evolves. ● Gather relevant information from multiple authoritative sources, using advanced searches effectively, and annotate sources. ● Assess the usefulness of each source in answering the research question. ● Synthesize and integrate information into the text selectively to maintain the flow of ideas. ● Avoid plagiarism and overreliance on any one source and follow a standard format (e.g., MLA, APA) for citation. ● Present information, choosing from a variety of formats.

9-10.W.4 Apply the writing process to – ● Plan and develop; draft; revise using appropriate reference materials; rewrite; try a new approach, focusing on addressing what is most significant for a specific purpose and audience; and edit to produce and strengthen writing that is clear and coherent.

Objective:

  • Students will be able to clearly explain an issue in their writing
  • Students will be able to use reliable sources to strengthen their claims
  • Students will be able to create a solution to a problem using evidence from reliable resources

Essential Question: How can I incorporate my research into my writing in order to persuade my audience of the success of a given solution to a problem?

Procedure:

  1. The teacher will explain the assignment and go over the requirements
  2. The students will begin their research and cite sources in MLA format
  3. The students will prewrite, apply their research to their writing, and proof read after they have finished writing.
  4. The teacher will conference with each student throughout both days of writing time.
  5. The assignment will be due after 2 days of work time.

Product or Assessment: The students will turn in a final draft problem solution essay to the teacher.
