Risk-Taking Rubric—Middle School

Seeking Challenges	I seek new experiences and try new ideas and activities without worrying if I will be good at them.	I like to try new ideas and activities even if I might not be good at them.	I sometimes need encouragement to try ideas and activities that I might not be good at.		I will not try ideas and activities if I think that I will not be good at them.
Setting Goals	I like to set goals for myself that may seem too difficult. I am not afraid of failure.	I like to set challenging goals for myself that I know I can reach. I am usually not afraid to fail.	If I am encouraged, I can set goals that challenge me a little. I prefer not to try an activity if I think I might fail.		I do not set goals, or I only set goals that I can easily reach. I will not try an activity if I think I will fail.
Weighing Risks	I use my understanding of an activity’s meaning, my own abilities, and possible outcomes to decide whether a risk is worth taking.	I think logically about whether a risk is worth taking.	If I am reminded, I think about whether a risk is worth taking.		I take risks without thinking about whether they are worth taking.
Learning from Mistakes	I admit my mistakes and try to learn from them.	I admit my mistakes and try not to make them again.	I have to be reminded to not make the same mistakes repeatedly.		I do not think about my mistakes, and I often make the same mistakes repeatedly.
Confidence	If I work hard when I try something new, I believe I will be able to do it well and enjoy it.	If I work hard when I try something new, I believe I will be able to do it.	I need a lot of encouragement to try something new, because I am afraid I will not be able to do it.	If I have to try something new, I am pretty sure I will not be able to do it.
Self-Reliance	I do what I think is important, no matter what my classmates might think of me.	I usually do what I think is important, no matter what my classmates might think.	I rarely do anything that my classmates might not approve of.		I do not do anything that my classmates might not approve of.
