7.RV.3.1 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in works of literature, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of rhymes and other repetitions of sounds (e.g., alliteration) within a story, poem, or play.

Description:

Students will be able to distinguish between the 3 types of Irony.

Objective:

  • Students will be able to distinguish between the 3 types of Irony within a reading passage
  • Students will use close reading skills to identify literary elements within a text
  • Students will be able to assess the language within a passage to determine which type of irony is being used

Essential Question:

Does this passage contain verbal irony, dramatic irony, or situational irony?

Procedure:

  1. The teacher will introduce the 3 types of irony in this presentation.
  2. The class will view the videos within the presentation and discuss them
  3. The students will read a set of passages and assess the language used to determine which type of irony is being used.

Product or Assessment:

The students will turn in a Google doc in which they determined the type of irony for each reading passage and explained how they arrived at each answer.
