Description:

Students will analyze the character traits of the main characters in a given novel by filling out a character web and citing textual evidence.

Objective:

  • Students will analyze the character traits of each main character in the text
  • Students will cite examples from the text to support ideas
  • Students will analyze character decision and how it affects plot

Essential Question:

How does this character’s decisions and dialogue reveal their character traits?

How do each character’s traits affect the plot of the story?

Procedure:

  1. The teacher will go over Character Traits in this slideshow while students take notes.
  2. The students will use this list by www.readwritethink.org to determine the character traits of the characters in the book they are currently reading in class.
  3. The students will complete this character web as they analyze each character. The students must also cite specific examples from the book that display each trait. This character web is set to apply to Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli, but it can be changed to apply to any novel.

Product or Assessment:

Students will turn in a completed character web to the teacher.

Modification: Give students the page numbers that already display the character traits of each character.
