Duration: Day 1: 30 minutes

                   Day 2: 30 minutes

DOK Level: 3 & 4 (individual handshake and introduction)

Indiana Standard:

Counseling Competencies: Social/Emotional Development

Competency 1: Students will acquire and further develop the knowledge, attitudes and interpersonal skills to help them understand and respect self and others.

Competency 2: Students develop personal management and collaborative skills needed to become successful learners, responsible citizens, and productive workers.

Competency 3: Students will understand personal safety skills.

Objective: 1. Students will understand what it means to have good manners.

                   2. Students will be able to shake hands and introduce themselves appropriately.

Procedure:

Day 1: The teacher will  deliver the Mannerly Google document to individual students online.Students will watch the videos and read the text. (30 minutes)

Day 2: The teacher and students will use the document titled Manners Discussion & Activity in order to hold a class discussion. The activity for this character trait is to know how to properly introduce yourself and shake hands. The teacher will model this and then practice individually with each student. (30 minutes)

Product or Assessment: Day 1: none

Accommodations:

  1. Line up students that you feel are lacking in this ability directly sandwiched between those that are good at it. This way they hear the good modeling both before and after they come through your line.
  2. Group students so that there are a few that are great at it and a few that are not together. Have them go practice together before coming back through your line.

Enrichment:

  1. Practice introducing yourself in a formal situation and then again in more of an informal setting. Discuss formal settings, informal setting, the differences that do or do not exist in the introductions and why this is so.
  2. Practice introducing a friend to another friend or a parent to your friend and so on. Discuss why this is important and how new people feel when they are not introduced properly and how they feel when they are introduced properly.
