Indiana Standard:
Prerequisite skill for: 6.GM.1: Convert between measurement systems (English to metric and metric to English) given conversion factors, and use these conversions in solving real-world problems.
Objective:
- Students will know the correct units for length, weight, and capacity.
(In other words, students will know that ounces is NOT a unit for length.)
- Students will know the abbreviations for the units of length, weight, and capacity.
- Students will be able to convert within the US Customary System.
For example, 13 inches = ? feet.
Procedure: The teacher will deliver the Google document titled US Customary Units of Measure to students. Students will:
- Take notes in their spiral notebooks over units of length, weight, and capacity, their abbreviations and how to change between the units.
- Students will watch videos on the skills.
- Students will spend 15 minutes practice the skills on online games.
- Students will spend the remaining 20-30 minutes of class time working on IXL.
Product or Assessment: notes and work in spiral notebook
Accommodations: Some students may need to work through the problems in a small group with the teacher. Some students may benefit from working with a higher level student.
