Description:
The topic of this essay is the career and education that the students each wish to pursue after high school. This paper will give the students an end goal to focus on throughout high school and serve as a pretest at the beginning of the year for the teacher to base each student’s individual skills and areas of weakness. This essay is intended for students who may not be college bound.
Objective:
- Students will map out their writing using prewriting/ planning techniques
- Students will be able to form a thesis statement about a given topic
- Students will develop research and citing skills
Essential Question:
What information do I need to research in order to fully map out my career plan?
Procedure:
- The teacher will introduce the research paper that the students will work on for the next 2 weeks. The teacher will also instruct the students on how to find appropriate sources online for their topic.
- On the first day the students will begin prewriting their topic on whichever format they choose in a Google Doc.
- The next day students will focus on their introductions and thesis statements. The teacher will review strong thesis statements in this slideshow.
- The next day students will work on their work cited page and research
- The teacher will conference with students during the next day while they focus on writing the body of their essays.
- The students will do peer revision and polish up their essays.
- Essays are due at the end of class in the 5th day, allowing time for additional polishing or peer feedback.
Product or Assessment:
Students will turn in a completed essay along with a work cited page.
