Introduction to Political Parties

Indiana Standard: SS8 8.1.5, 8.1.7, 8.1.9

Objective: Students will discover their personal political leanings through a website and express their opinion on their perceived accuracy of those findings

Procedure:

  1. Prior to class, draw a large 20x20 grid on the class chalk or whiteboard
  2. Distribute the link to the Political Compass Survey
  3. Explain to students that before we dive into the historical beginnings of political parties, we will discuss your position in modern politics, even if you don’t think you have prior knowledge
  4. Have students complete the survey to the best of their abilities, emphasizing that if there are any questions that they do not understand they need to ask for clarification
  5. After students have completed the survey, have them post their coordinates to their classroom LMS and graph their dot on the classroom master board
  6. After this, place the dots for various historical figures on the board and discus the class’ results, chiefly whether they feel that the survey is accurate in its findings

Accommodations:

  • Writing assignment could be assigned as a supplement or replacement for the classroom discussion
