8.RL.2.3 Analyze how particular lines of dialogue or incidents in a work of literature propel the action, reveal aspects of a character, or provoke a decision.

Description:

Students will answer an essay prompt over The Outsiders by SE Hinton. The essay will require the students to analyze how character decision impacts the plot of the story, and will also help students form personal connections to the text.

Objective:

  • Students will use close reading skills to locate information within a text
  • Students will form personal connections to the text
  • Students will be able to cite specific examples from a text

Essential Question:

Did the reasoning behind each character’s decision impact my feelings about the ending of the novel?

Procedure:

  1. The class will read the last chapter of The Outsiders together.
  2. The teacher will lead discussion over the events at the end of the book. Discussion can be informal or incorporated into a Google Slideshow.
  3. The students will work on a reader response essay prompt.

Product or Assessment:

The students will submit their reader response essays as homework.
