To Make a Law

Duration: 1 class period

DOK Level: 3

Indiana Standard: USG 3.9

Objective: Students will understand the basic process of how a bill becomes a law, critique the current process, and offer suggested improvements to the process.

Procedure:

  1. Ask the students how they think laws are created.  If they don’t know, ask them how they think laws should be made. (discussion to follow)
  2. After a brief discussion, show the class the classic School House RockI’m Just a Bill
  3. After the video is over, have the students write on a white or chalkboard the basic steps they were shown.  
  4. Students will then be asked to give the pros and cons of this process, what they think works well, and what they think does not work well.  Discussion should follow, but students should also write their answers out in a minimum of one paragraph.

Product or Assessment: Writing assignment

Accommodations:

  • Students could be given a worksheet with the steps, minus key terms, of the process to fill in as they write
  • Assessment length can be extended to suit high level writers
