Solving an Art Mystery using the Internet!

Abstract

Whether information is needed for study or daily life, the Internet has developed into an essential source of knowledge. Collecting information from the Internet may seem simple, however, at times one may get an overwhelmingly large number of results for simple queries, some of which may not be relevant or reliable. This lesson teaches learners a step-wise approach that prepared them to conduct a basic search with internet.  By exploring different types of search engines and inputting key words into the search bar, the learner will  gain experience and confidence using the steps needed to successfully search the internet.  It prepares learners to conduct Internet searches effectively and prepares them to take the next step in their learning.

Learner Audience / Primary Users

Learners are adults with basic knowledge of English and of computer technology.  In this class, learners would have a basic understanding of computer technology and will be using this course as a building block for continued skill growth.  This is a beginning level class.

The purpose of this lesson is for learners to be able to:

  • Select the most appropriate sources based on certain criteria for evaluating a web resource.

Prior Knowledge

Learners should have a basic to novice understanding of using a computer, accessing the Internet. 

Required Resources

The learner will require access to the Internet through a computer that will be applied in the classroom.  If this lesson is completed Online, the student will be required to have a functioning internet connection, access to a word processing program, and earphones and microphone to participate in the virtual classroom of the instructors choice.

Part 2: Lesson

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, the learner should be able to:

1.     Identify where to go for internet searches.

2.      List key words to use for the subject.

3.     Describe reasons why website meets the search needs.

4.     Select a proper site based on the key words.

5.    Identify key points of the website selected.

6.     Duplicate search using a different key word.

Context Summary

Adult learners have completed some to no High School training either in the United States or Internationally and have not receive formal instruction in computers and using the Internet to search for information. They have basic technology skills  that they use everyday for Smartphones, emails, and texting but lack the experience to complete an online search.  

This lesson can be conducted through a virtual classroom with an instructor present or in a classroom setting. The maximum number of learners is 10 for each instructor.

Relevance to Practice

Adult learners need to access quality information to complete assignments which may be required as part of their upgrading program. This course will provide the building blocks to assist students in their internet and web searches.   By providing the students a basic approach, they will be able to search the internet with more confidence.  The skills of evaluating and critiquing evidence can be applied to other, more practical areas in life, including the ability to discern reputable information and websites and not believing everything one may see on the Internet.

Key Terms and Concepts

Abstract: Is a brief summary paragraph of a research article, paper or thesis. It is often used to help the reader quickly ascertain the paper's purpose.

Search Engines: These include- Google, Yahoo!, Bing

Art Style: Description of the type of art that is being created or displayed



Instructional Strategies and Activities

Warm-Up

Time: 5 minutes

Recap of the last weeks discussion asking the questions- Slide 2

Introduction

Time: 5 minutes

The instructor will discuss the agenda for the lesson as listed on slide 3.

The instructor will explain the format of the lesson:

  1. Slide on different search engines
  2. Slide on the problem and the acitivty
  3. Slide on the clue
  4. Providing an example for the class
  5. Individual activity


Presentation / Modeling / Demonstration

Time: 15 minutes

  1. The instructor will explain the points on 'Slide 4 - Different Types of Search Engines  
  2. The instructor will explain the points on 'Slide 5 - Exploring the Problem for the Activity
  3. The instructor will show Slide 6 - The Clue is presented
  4. The instructor will provide a run through example of the activity, step by step.
  5.  The instructor will provide an opportunity to answer questions individually

Guided Practice

Time:  15 minutes

  1. Learners will be given a worksheet to complete based on the lesson for the day.  Students will be required to work on their own at their desk and follow the instructions on the worksheet.  Students will need to access the computer to be able to complete this assignment. 

Evaluation

Time: 5 minutes

Instructor will provide feedback as a group discussion. The instructor will show Slide 8 of the PowerPoint Presentation and summarize the lesson before concluding. 

Application

Time: n/a

Next class, students are to provide three topics that are they are interested in while using Google.  In addition, students must bring back the links to the websites so that class can explore these topics together.
