NASA has four mission directorates:

•Aeronautics: research to improve air transportation;

–Dates back to the 1930s as National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics

•Human Exploration and Operations:

–International Space Station operations,

–development of commercial spaceflight capabilities, and

–human exploration of asteroids and Mars [being planned].

•Science: explore the Earth, solar system and universe beyond [NASA  has sent probes to every planet and used space telescope];

•Space Technology: develop revolutionary, high-payoff technologies that enable NASA's future missions while providing economic benefit to the nation.
