To tell the story of aviation, we do need to start by noting there are two kinds of aircraft:

••Lighter-than-air craft such as balloons, dirigibles, and blimps;

••Heavier-than-air craft such as airplanes and helicopters.

The Mongolfier brothers first flew the first lighter-than-air craft--a hot-air balloon in 1783.
