A Healthy Foundation

Watch: Introduction to Health

Watch: Perception and Optimism

View: Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs

Part 1-Introduction to Health:

To begin the lesson, create an environment to let students openly answer the following questions.

1. A physically healthy person is...

2. A mentally/emotionally healthy person is...

3. A socially healthy person is...

After discussing with the class these questions and showing to be healthy is more that just eating healthy and exercising, view the Introduction to Health presentation to talk about the six dimensions of health.

Part 2-Optimism and Perception:

Our attitude about our health has large influence on how healthy we choose to be. View the Perception and Optimism presentation to get the student to think about how everyone perceives life, challenges and our health differently, but it our attitude towards our health to help influence us for good. Create discussions as you go through the presentation. You will link out to the Pixar short film, "Boundin'". After viewing the video, talk about no matter how hard life gets, we have to choose to have a positive attitude or things will never look up. Bad things happen to us all and we get to choose how we handle those situations. We all have those “jackolopes” around to help bring us up and hopefully we can be that for others too. Along with Boundin', Team Hoyt is another powerful message showing, "Yes You Can!" is a common thing you will hear Rick and Dick Hoyt express. While watching this short clip about Team Hoyt, think about what may be holding you back from choosing a healthier lifestyle. Is it a health problem, lack of time or energy, no motivation and/or something else. What motivates you? Think about changes you would like to make throughout the semester and let's set goals and help you get going in the right direction.

Part 3- Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs:

Help students understand the life of Abraham Maslow and his accomplishments as a well-known psychologist. Teach students the Heirarchy of Needs by viewing the presentation.

A Healthy Foundation Assignment

Sometimes, getting out of comfort zone helps us better understand ourselves and become better people. The purpose of this assignment is to give you an opportunity to step out of your comfort zone. For this assignment you will identify one thing you have never done before that you think may help you develop a positive characteristic trait. Examples of getting out of your comfort zone may be asking someone on a date, calling someone rather than texting, or providing service that you normally would not do.

It is up to you how much you choose to challenge yourself for this assignment. You can help shape your life in a positive way or just do the assignment to do the assignment . . . you decide how much you personally want to invest.
