Physical Education Grade 2: Throwing and Catching

Grade 2:  Underhand and Overhand Throwing at Targets

Essential Question:     How do I correctly throw an object using an underhand and overhand throw?

#2 – A physically educated person demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.

After demonstrating and explaining the cues for both the underhand and overhand throws, divide class into about 6 groups to practice throwing at targets.

Six learning centers should be set up as follows:

1 – Throwing bean bags into hoops (underhand throw) – students will stand at blue line (basketball markings at key) and attempt to throw bean bags into the hula hoops that are set flat on the floor; students should attempt three throws then change places with partner.

2 – Throwing rag balls into square targets on wall (overhand throw) – students will stand at blue line and attempt to throw rag balls into the squares on the wall; students should attempt three throws then change places with partner.

3 – Throwing footballs into hoops suspended in air (overhand throw) – students will stand at blue “foul line” and attempt to throw footballs through hoops that are suspended from the basketball goal; students should attempt three throws then change places with partner.

4 - Throwing small bean bags into buckets (underhand throw) – students will stand at blue line and attempt to throw bean bags into buckets that are set on the floor against the wall; students should attempt three throws then change places with partner.

5 – Throwing bean bags into bean bag boards (underhand throw) – students will stand at blue line and attempt to throw bean bags into the beanbag board that is leaning against the wall (partners may need to hold the board to keep it from falling); students should attempt three throws then change places with partner.

6 – Throwing rag balls into rings held by partner (overhand throw) – students will stand at blue circle and attempt to throw rag balls into rings held against the wall by a partner; students should attempt three throws then change places with partner.

After students have rotated through all stations, review teaching cues for both the underhand and overhand throw.  Make notes of students needing additional practice with “teaching cues”.  Students will be assessed at the end of the unit using the state assessment rubric for throwing and catching.
