Sharing Goals and Classroom Expectations using Google Slides
Title: Sharing goals and classroom expectations using Google Slides
Overview: In this lesson, students will work together to create two slideshows: one to discuss their goals/reasons for studying English and how learning English will help them in the future, and the second to discuss what classroom environment would be most conducive to meeting those goals.
Content/Context: This lesson will focus on the Northstar Digital Literacy standards: Basic Computer Skills standards 12-15 and Email standards 1-4.
Length of lesson: 1 hour
Digital Literacy Standards addressed:
Basic Computer Skills standards 12-15; Email standards 1-4. Students will review how to open their emails using their login name and passwords. We will take some time going over how to open emails and how to click on links. Then, students will open their emails to find a link to a google slideshow.
Lesson Objective(s): By the end of this lesson, students will be able to open a slides link from their emails and create content within that slide. They’ll share their slides with the class.
Assessing Mastery of the Objective(s): By the end of this lesson, students will be able to open an email, as evidenced by clicking on an email and clicking on the blue link to the Google slides. Students will also be able to open and enter information into a google slide, as evidenced by creating two slides, one with their name/goal and one with their name/best classroom environment.
Materials/links: Students will need access to computers with Internet, gmail, and google slides.
(Note: Lower-level students can work in teams; higher-level students can create their own slides.)
Lesson Outline:
Introduction:
Again, remind students that they can earn certificates by passing the Northstar Digital Literacy tests and show photos of the certificates. Describe how using google docs is going to help them reach their digital literacy goals by first ensuring they understand how valuable digital literacy skills are in the job market and then showing them examples of different things they can do with google docs. Then re-explain that they need emails to get connected to the classroom google docs tools, and reiterate that that’s why we’re using their emails again today and that they should remember their usernames and logins.
Before the class, the teacher will have sent students a link to the shared slide show. Students should find the link to the slideshow in their emails. Give students a little time to look for the link.
Explanation/Modeling: First, use the overhead projector to show students how to click on the link in the students’ emails. Model and then ask students to click the email that says “Student Goals.” Then click the big blue button within the email. The link will lead them to a slideshow: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1aBDBcQGLPBn66obcFiGMOACevRJ1-NH_jkvRiQj-qMM/edit?usp=sharing
The slideshow says “Evening Class Students’ Goals” and then each slide has a place for the student to write his/her name and goals/reasons for studying English. Show students an example, and show students how to write a name in the appropriate place. Then show students how to move the cursor down to where they can write some goals. Brainstorm some goals with the class .Then assign each person (or team) a slide number and show them how to choose their slide and write only on their slide.
Guided Practice: Walk around the classroom, help students create their slides, and help them write sentences. They will need help with ideas and spelling.
Independent Practice:Since this is a mixed-level class, several students will finish the activity very quickly. As students finish their slides, give them the second link: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1ze3RqJEb-CQ1eACnUIx23ojKsGAkEBg3AxisPoIFJVM/edit?usp=sharing
Student Reflection on Learning, Closure, Connection: Have students share their slides with the class. What kinds of goals do they have? What kind of classroom do the students need to have to reach those goals? Can we all agree to some basic rules (come to class on time, etc.)? Fantastic, everyone! Great job, see you next time!
