The Adventures of Caramello the Koala
A Narrative text on how deforestation affects animals written by Pedro Antunes with the help of his teacher Ms. Fox.
Caramello the koala was siting in his home up a gum tree. The branch he was on was swaying in the wind. He was eating gum leaves and looking out over the mountains covered with tall trees. Below, Caramello saw his friends Wendy the wombat and Kyle the kangaroo looking for food. Everything was very peaceful.
The next morning, Caramello was woken up by the unusual laughter of Kate the kookaburra coming from across the creek. The forest did not appear to be as peaceful as usual. Logging trucks were coming in across the creeks and lots of noise could be heard, especially from the birds flying away as trees were being cut down to make way for farmland. Many animals were running around confused trying to cross the creek as their homes were getting destroyed by the logging trucks and the falling trees.
The next day the logging trucks returned and started to cut down the trees next to Caramello's home. He was very frightened and started to panic. Caramello saw Kyle hopping away and Kate the kookaburra flying away. Caramello climbed down the tree and started to move quickly along the ground. As Caramello looked back he was horrified to see the tree that he had been living in, had been cut down to make wood products such as tissues and paper. Caramello ran away looking for a new tree to live in, she wandered around all night looking for food and water. She could not drink from her normal creek because it was full of small twigs and leaves. She could not find any trees that felt like home.
The following day Caramello the came back but there was nothing left of where he had lived. It was so quiet, muddy and empty. Caramello sat down and started to cry because he had lost his home and all her friends. A bush walker came across Caramello and saw him crying he gave him some water and he picked him up and they took him to the wildlife vet where they gave him an examination. The results of the examination where super, so they released back into the wild and set him back free so he could live a normal life.
Caramello was happy in his new environment as it was a green zone protected from logging. He found a fantastic gum tree to live in and he was so happy that his friends, Kate the kookaburra, Wendy the wombat and Kyle the kangaroo could all live back together again.
