Description

The art/creation station center provides opportunities for students to use a variety of materials to express creativity, experiment with techniques, explore different art materials, collaborate with others, and persevere with a task. Students develop self confidence and begin to understand constructive feedback. 

Purpose

  • gain an appreciate of art
  • express imagination and creativity
  • develop fine motor skills
  • experiment with a variety of materials
  • demonstrate pride and confidence in personal work
  • develop eye-hand coordination
  • use expanded vocabulary to describe creations

Suggested Materials

  • tempera paint, watercolors, finger paint
  • paint brushes and aprons
  • stamps and sponges 
  • crayons
  • markers 
  • cotton balls, 
  • scissors
  • variety of paper in different colors
  • glue
  • yarn and ribbon
  • collage materials
  • play-doh or clay
  • drying rack
  • painting easel
  • natural items ( leaves, twigs, etc.)
  • craft supplies (wiggly eyes, pom-poms, felt, pipe cleaners, etc.)
  • sculpture materials ( paper towel tubes, craft sticks etc.)

Questioning Examples

These guiding questions can be used to assist the teacher, instructional assistant, or parent volunteers in supporting children's development and learning during play.

  • How can you describe your creation?
  • What materials did you use and why did you use them?
  • What other materials could you add to your creation?
  • What would happen if you used___________?
  • How would your creation change if you used ______________?


Please note materials should be rotated as themes and students' interest change.  At the beginning of the school year it is important to start with minimal materials to teach proper use and cleanup. This center should be located in an area to allow for easy clean up and minimal impact on the floor or environment. Placement near a sink is suggested.
