4.OA.A.3 Solving Multi-Step Word Problems - Scooter Rentals

Evidence Statement 4.C.6-1 Present solutions to multi-step problems in the form of valid chains of reasoning, using symbols such as equals signs appropriately (for example, rubrics award less than full credit for the presence of nonsense statements such as 1 + 4 = 5 + 7 = 12, even if the final answer is correct), or identify or describe errors in solutions to multi-step problems and present corrected solutions. Content Scope: Knowledge and skills articulated in 4.OA.3

Description

Part A= 2 points

Student response includes the following 2 elements

Reasoning Component= 1 point

o   Student provides a valid explanation of how to find the number of days the family of four can rent scooters within the $250.00 limit.  ( 2 days with remainder of $58.00)

Computation Component-= 1 point

Student provides the correct number of days the family can rent the scooters (2)

Sample Student Response:

I would find the number of days the family can rent scooters by first finding the amount it would cost one person. Then I multiply that answer by 4 to find the cost of the scooters  for 1 day for the whole family. Then I would divide the amount Dad wants to spend by the amount of one day for the whole family

$6.00 x 4 = $24.00 (Cost of scooter rentals for 1 day for 1 person)

$24.00 x 4 people = $96.00 (Cost of scooter rentals for 1 day for family of 4)

$250.00 ÷96.00 = 2 days remainder of $58.00 (Number of days family of 4 can rent scooters)

Part B

Reasoning = 1 point

o   Student provides the correct reasoning that Juan and Maria can ride scooters for another full day.

Sample Student Response

There was $58.00 left in Dad’s budget.  It would cost $48.00 if only Maria and Juan rent scooters

$6.00 x 4 hours= $24.00

$24.00 x 2 (Juan and Maria) = $48.00
