Making a Quilt 5.D.1 - Measurement and Data

Making a Quilt

Loretta is making a baby quilt for her family. She needs to cut the blue fabric below in to smaller pieces. The blue fabric is 1 2/5  square feet wide and 9 9/10  square feet long.

Loretta cuts the fabric in the following order:

·      She cuts off 9/10  foot from the width.

·      She cuts off 9/10  foot from the length.

·      Then, she cuts the leftover piece of fabric into 10 equally long pieces of fabric.

What is the area of each of the 10 equally long pieces of fabric? Explain your answer completely and show all your work. Include in your explanation an equation you can use to find the area of each of the 10 equally long pieces of fabric.

·      Computation component = 1 point

o   The student provides the correct area of each piece, 1 foot or an equivalent fraction.

·      Modeling component = 1 point

o   The student provides a correct equation to find the area of one piece.

·      Modeling component = 1 point

o   The student provides correct work or explanation.

Sample Student Response:

First, I found the width of the fabric after the first cut. The width after the first cut was   square feet since 1 2/5 - 9/10 = 14/5 - 9/10   = 14/10 - 9/10  = 5/10 .

Then I found the length of the fabric after the second cut. The length after the second cut was 9 square feet because 9 9/10 - 9/10  = 9.

Then the length is cut into 10 equal-sized pieces. This means that the length of each piece is 9/10  square feet since 9 divided by 10 = 9/10 .

Finally, to find the area of each of the 10 equally-long pieces, I can use the formula for the area of a rectangle, A= length x width.

The area of each piece is 9/20 square feet since 5/10 x 9/10 = 9/20 .
