Releve in First Position

Materials/Equipment: Proper Shoes or bare feet

Lesson:

  1. Begin with your feet heels touching toes forward
  2. Turn toes out keeping proper posture as far as is comfortable. Be sure heels are still touching.
  3. Move through first position arms: low, middle and high
  4. Have students focus on their posture: shoulders relaxed, arms rounded in low first, abdominals contracted and held, hips forward, rear end tucked under and toes and knees turned out.
  5. Check posture and make corrections.
  6. Have students hold their positions while you make corrections.
  7. If necessary allow students to relax and shake out tighten muscles.
  8. Have students begin again from step one.
  9. Once proper position is found again have students hold the position slowing lifting and shifting their weight to the balls and toes of their feet.
  10. Be sure toes are still turn out. Maintaining first position low with arms.
  11. Have students hold for 5 seconds. Students should be study and not shaky. Remind students to keep core locked.
  12. Students should be able to return and maintain position when pushed slightly without dropping heels.
  13. Students should then return their heels to the floor.
  14. Steps 9 - 13 should be repeated until students are comfortable holding this position for 5 seconds without losing balance.
  15. Once this is acheived students should repeat the process holding arms in first middle and first high positions. Each for 5 seconds.
  16. Students will continue to practice and holding until a 15 second balance can be acheived and arms can move through all 3 arm positions: low. middle and high.

Assessment: Have students demonstrate a releve in all three arm positions held for 15 seconds.
