Guess Who, Novice Low, ASL

About the Boise State World Languages Resource Center (WLRC) Language Activity Repository

The activities provided by the Boise State World Languages Resource Center (WLRC) serve as foundational activities which can be adapted by any language and scaled up or down on the proficiency scale.

This activity was created by upper-division language students working in the World Languages Resource Center at Boise State University. Our activities seek to help students solidify their interpersonal speaking and interpretive listening skills through task-based situations or communicative activities. We recommend using these activities to help reinforce the content students are learning, allowing the students time to feel comfortable using the unit’s vocabulary and grammar structures through application. Further, these activities should be facilitated in approximately 90% (or more) in the target language, per the recommendation of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.

Using the WLRC Repository’s Activities:

When you are ready to begin remixing the activity, in order to adapt it for your target language and audience, simply click the “Remix This Resource” button at the top of your screen. The text provided in purple is a suggestion of what you might say to your students and should be changed to the target language.

Most activities contain a connected chapter, two to three “NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do” statements, a warm-up, main activity, and a wrap-up. In addition to the instructions, some activities may include a “cheat sheet” containing the target vocabulary and grammar structures emphasized in the activity. Though most of the lab materials are provided, a computer, projector, printer, and laminator may also be needed to fully utilize materials.

Many of the activities include printable cards and other instructional materials. If you would like to adapt these materials for your language, please email WLRCLAR@gmail.comand we will provide you with an editable copy. For YouTube videos and other websites, hyperlinks are provided.

Enjoy!

“Today, we are going to talk about physical descriptions. We will start with a fashion show, then we'll play a game called Guess Who."

"Now, partner up. With your partner, I will give both of you a fashion show checklist, a dry erase marker, and an eraser."

3. The students should then take a few minutes to answer the questions about their partner.

"With your partner, ask the questions on the checklist and write down their responses."

3. When all groups are finished, the fashion show will begin! The first student in a group will sign the information about their partner, while the other student stands. After they're done describing their partner, their partner will strike a pose.

"When all groups are finished, the first person will sign the card. The second person will stand. After the first person finishes, the second person will pose."

4. Have all group take turns until everyone has introduced their partner.

Main Activity: Guess Who

1. Begin by pairing students up and handing out the Guess Who sheets, a dry erase marker, and an eraser.

"Now, we will play a game called Guess Who. Find a partner and each of you will take a Guess Who sheet, a dry erase marker, and an eraser."

2. One partner will start by picking a person on the game board, but they won't tell their partner. The second partner will then ask various physical description questions to guess who their partner has picked. The questions must be yes/no questions.

"With your partner, one person will pick a person on the game board, but keep it private. The second person will ask physical questions about the people, to try and guess who their partner picked. You must ask only yes or no questions. You can ask questions like, 'Does your person have glasses?'."

3. When their partner responds, they will cross off people on the game board that don't match, until they figure out who their partner guessed. When they finish, they'll switch roles.

"After your partner responds, you will cross people off the game board until you understand who they picked. When you're finished, switch roles and play again."

Wrap-Up: Discussion

Wrap-Up Questions (Pick the a few you’d like to ask):

1. What was easy and what was difficult?
2. Did you like the game?
