: View attachments for visual examples.
1. 10 or more articulating paper dolls about 6 inches in height. Image search paper dolls including historical figures, famous pop culture individuals, and diverse cultural backgrounds that will fit nicely into your target language study and culture. Laminate the page, have a TA cut out and attach articulating limbs with brads.
2. 10 or more envelopes for the paper dolls.
3. 10 mini craft bags with assorted scrapbook paper in 3X5 inch sizes.
4. 10 copies of student directions page with group member names pre-selected by teacher into groups of 3. (Handout found at the bottom of this lesson plan)
5. Class set of scissors / glue sticks
6. Optional: 10 magazine pages that include various backgrounds (golf course, park, concert, snowy scene, desert, kitchen interior, etc.)
Lesson Sequence:
Activity |
Time |
Materials |
Create excitement by finding students who can explain the competition on “Project Runway”, a reality TV show where amateur clothing designers compete, go through elimination and earn prizes. Distribute directions handout with pre-selected groups assigned. Have students group together and locate their vocabulary lists of clothing and related adjectives and verbs. | 4 min. | Directions handout |
Select students to read aloud the directions on the handout. Clarify along the way by pointing out the materials around the classroom. | 4 min. |
|
Have one student from each group to the board to select a random envelope to discover their paper doll individual. A second student will select the “Mood Bag” (mini bag of scrapbooking paper.) The third student will select the background (if using.) | 1 min. | Paper doll, scrapbook paper, background |
Students work in their group to brainstorm, design, create clothing and accessories to work for their doll. Students refer to their notes and vocabulary to write out their descriptions. Teacher circulates to assist. | 20min. | Scissors Glue Background |
Students bring their project to the document camera to be projected to class. If you have no projector, students may arrange their project on a desk and students gather around for presentation. Each group takes a turn to present their work to the class. | 25 min. | Document camera, if possible |
Closure to sum up lesson and classroom clean-up. | 3 min. | Paper towels spray cleaner |
To streamline the lesson or to shorten it:
You can assign one student to design, one student to write the description and one student to pronounce.
Modifications to extend lesson into a second 55 min. period or a block of 110 minutes:
Day one: Instead of presenting on day one, have students peer edit their writing, consult with teacher and make corrections to their written piece.
Day two: Have students practice their pronunciation within their groups prior to presenting with teacher guidance. (15 min.) Have students present to class while audience takes notes on content, creativity and design for later judging. (30 min). Have class secretly vote on designs via secret ballot. (10 min.) Announce winners during the next class.
Notes: To increase level of difficulty you can modify the directions handout to add:
1. Include weather conditions
2. Using the future tense, describe what their individual WILL wear in these conditions/locations.
3. Using the conditional tense, describe what their individual WOULD wear in these conditions/locations.
4. Write a story about a vacation / trip / day off in past tense describing what these individuals DID wear and why.
Save the paper dolls and examples to use from year to year.
· A background scene where your famous person will be featured
Directions:
1. Each group member will create an outfit for your individual. (5 pts)
2. Each member will prepare a written description stating what the individual is wearing and why. 15 words minimum. (10 pts.)
3. Each group member will use the document camera to present the character with the outfit / accessories by reading the description to the class. (5 pts.)
Example*:
Michael Jackson porte un maillot de bain bleu, des lunettes de soleil, un grand chapeau vert et jaune et des sandales noires à la plage parce qu’il aime nager dans l’océan avec des amis.
Notes
· Use clothing items and accessories that we know from our current vocabulary. Do not look up lots of words the class will not recognize.
· Add color and size adjectives as appropriate.
· No inappropriate nakedness, please.
* Non-French teacher translation of example above:
Michael Jackson is wearing a blue bathing suit, sunglasses, a large green and yellow hat with black sandals at the beach because he likes to swim in the ocean with friends.
