About the Boise State World Languages Resource Center (WLRC) Language Activity Repository

The activities provided by the Boise State World Languages Resource Center (WLRC) serve as foundational activities which can be adapted by any language and scaled up or down on the proficiency scale. Many of these activities offer an English Version that is “language-agnostic” to provide language instructors from around the country a platform to remix these instructional materials, infusing them with their target language and culture! The activities within the Pathways Project OER Repository seek to help students solidify their interpersonal speaking and interpretive skills through task-based situations or communicative activities. These activities should be facilitated in the target language for approximately 90% (or more), per the recommendation of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.

How to use the WLRC Repository’s Activities:

1. Use the Activity as is:

Before you begin:

  • Most activities are 30 minutes in duration, unless otherwise specified.
  • Be sure to read through the activity description, and review the list of required materials. You will notice that the activity materials are also highlighted in yellow throughout the activity instructions.

2. Remix for Your Language Classroom:

When you are ready to begin remixing the activity, in order to adapt it for the needs of your language classroom, simply click the blue “Remix This Resource” button at the top of your screen. This will then take you to a screen with a NEW, editable version of this activity. The text provided in purple is a suggestion of what you might say to your students in the target language, and may be altered for different levels and age groups. All activities have “NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do” statements, a warm-up, a main activity, and a wrap-up.

Many of the activities include printable cards and other instructional materials such as Google Slideshows. If you would like to make changes to these materials for your classroom, follow the instructions below:

  • Google Slideshows:
    • To begin, go to File -> Copy to create an editable version of the slideshow.
    • Once finished with your changes, please complete the following steps to share:
    • Click on Share

    • Ensure link sharing is on and allow external access.

症状と薬 / Symptoms and Medicine

Description:

The students will be exposed to a few home remedies from Japan. They will then be shown medicine and will be asked to cure various symptoms of sickness using medicine or home remedies. The activity will finish with a comparison of Japan’s medicine to medicine from the students’ home cultures.

  • I can understand and discuss the symptoms of a sick person.
  • I can choose medicine or home remedies to treat a sick person’s symptoms.

Materials Needed:

Warm-up

1. Begin by introducing the Can-Dos for today’s activity.

"こんにちは。今日の Can-Do Statementsは..."

Using the presentation, show the students some pictures of home remedies in Japan. The students will try to guess what symptoms the home remedies are trying to relieve.

1. ネギ

何のためですか?どうやって使いますか?

鼻づまり

コットン又はガーゼをネギ汁につけて鼻に詰める(諸説あり)

2. アロエ

何のためですか?どうやって使いますか?

虫さされ、日焼け

アロエを切って、刺された場所に塗る

3. ハチミツ生姜

何のためですか?どうやって使いますか?

風邪(喉の痛み)

生姜、ハチミツをお湯に混ぜる

Main Activity

1. We will first show them photos of medicine. The students will try to guess what symptoms that medicine is trying to relieve. Afterwards, show them the home remedies and ask them what they're used for. 

“はじめに生徒たちに薬の写真を見せます。生徒たちはその薬がどの症状を治すためのものなのかを予想します。その後で、生徒たちに民間療法の絵を見せます。そして生徒たちはそれらがどの症状に使われるのかを予想します。

“First, show the students a picture of the medicine. The students predict which symptom the medicine will cure. Then they show the students a picture of folk remedies. Expect what symptoms they will be used for. "

2. Next, there will be 3 (very sick) people that the students will give the medicine to depending on what the symptoms are. Have the students pair up and discuss which medicine they should give the person. This includes home remedies as well. 

"次に、生徒たちに3人の病気の人の写真を見せます。そして生徒たちはその人々にどの薬を渡したら良いのかを人々の症状によって予想します。生徒たちはペアになってどの薬を渡したら良いのかを相談します。これは民間療法も含みます。"

"Next, show the students a picture of the three sick people, and the students will predict which medicines to give to the people based on their symptoms. I ’ll ask you if you should give me the medicine. This includes folk remedies. ”

3. Use this model for an example:

        1. 症状:虫刺され、かゆい
            1. アロエを使います。
        2. 症状:頭痛、めまい、熱
            1. ケロリンを使います。
        3. 筋肉痛、肩こり
            1. キンカンを使います
        

Wrap-up

Ask some of the following questions to finish the lab: 

1. どんな病気にかかったことがありますか?

What kind of illnesses have you had?

2. あなたは熱があるとき、何をしますか?

What do you do when you have a fever?

3.  ILCでは何が食べられますか?

What can I eat at the ILC?


End of lab:

• Read Can-Do statements once more and have students evaluate their confidence. 
(Use thumbs up/thumbs down or download our student cards.) 
• Encourage students to be honest in their self-evaluation.
• Pay attention, and try to use feedback for future labs!
