The Literary Elements (PLOT) in a work of fiction.

Description

The intention of this activity is to study in a deeper way a well known short story from the North American Literature. Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving. And the aim is to let students increase their imagination and the application of the different Literary Elements when  reading the material.

During the developemt of this topic, students will be exposed to the Historical period of time to contextualize the short story, the origen, the writer, and its connotation in North American Literature.  They will be asked to read the material in advanced, in order to warm up their knowledge. 

The students according the level of expertise, will be demanded to develop certain activities that will reinforce their knowledge in a funny way,


Student Characteristics

Student Group

This material has been prepared to be developed with students of the major in Education (4th year).

But,  it also can be developed and used in different levels.  ( 7th - 12th grade)

Skill and Language Level

If working with upper levels, Critical thinking and analysis will be demanded, as well as a more developed presentation of the activities.

If working with lower levels, just the understanding of the plot will be requested, and the use and creation of material according to their age and knowledge of content.

By the end of the lesson, SWBAT :

Identify the different parts of the PLOT, and contextualize them through the short story studied.

Describe and contrast every part of the PLOT through the short story development.

To link ideas from the reading text and adapt them in a real life situation.

Lesson Plan for (180 minutes) 2 complete classes.

Assessment about their previous knowledge by eliciting free participation.

Introduction/Warm-up     (10 minutes)

For the Warm up activity the teacher must work with a set of matching game related to the history part, and also the literary elements. In that case, they will have the opportunity to infer about the different terminology, have fun through the activity, and warm up the previous knowledge.


Guided Practice (50 minutes)

* Presenting the PLOT (the different parts it has). The importance and relevance in every book, and integrating this information within the short story.

* Students will be requested to read the short story in advanced. During the work time in the classroom, they will be divided into 5 groups. (the 5 parts of the plot). Each group will be assigned with one of the parts from the plot. Each team must prepare a Gallery walk presentation related to the specific part they got, and adapt the information to the Short Story.

   Gallery Walk technique

Independent Practice (or Student Production) (60 minutes)

* At the end of the presentation (Gallery Walk) each student will write a Reflective Essay where they have to give their own perspective about the material studied.

How to write an essay

* Students will have the opportunity to exchange ideas about their own perspective from the Short Story. Then, they will interact with some peers by following the jigsaw technique in order to have one representative per stage, and give the chance to share in a small context.

* At the end of the jigsaw technique development, the students will return to their original groups and as team, they will summarize the last thought about their work.

Feedback (20 minutes)

The general Feedback will be worked as a debate technique, the complete class will be divided into 2 large teams. The teacher must prepare in advance a series of questions  or statements related to the Short story in general.  The teacher will be the moderator, and will wrap up each idea.

As a general conclusion, the teacher must align all the different ideas, work, and analysis given by the different groups into a common sense about Literary Elements applied to Rip Van Winkle Short story.


Closing Activity/Wrap-up (20 Minutes) 

At the end of the lesson, each group will have the opportunity to exchange a final idea to close the work developed.


Extension and/or Differentiation

If working with Upper levels, a different option could be asking the different groups to present a PLAY for the different parts of the plot distributed.

Giving oral speeches related to the history part they are developing.

If working with lower levels

They could be ask to work with puppets, drawing the ideas, reteling the story like a fairy tale.

Assessment

Assessment Methods

The different methods that will be included for the assessment part are :

*  Asking them to describe the different information they are working with. ( 5 different parts of the PLOT)

*Asking them to work in small groups and presenting diffrent number of chapters from the book (play)

* Preparing a Gallery Walk to share certain number of chapters.

* Writing a Reflective Essay, and adding their own points of view about the history part to wrap up all the information studied.
