Teacher Name Grade/Subjects Taught | Andrea Vasile- Math 6-8, Algebra |
Brief Tool Description What is its purpose? Is it for a particular dimension of the Thoughtful Classroom framework? What do the teacher and students do during the strategy that make it valuable? | A tool that encourages students to read and process information through analyzing what question the sections of the passage answer. Cornerstone 4: A Culture of Thinking and Learning |
Example(s) of How to Use the Tool in the Classroom Does it lend itself best to a particular subjects? Have you used the strategy successfully with a particular topic? Is there a lesson you can describe that illustrates how to use it? | I used this in both 6th and 7th grade for questions that provide a lot of information, but only require a few pieces of information to solve. Rather than writing a question after each paragraph, as the tool suggests, I had them underline key words and explain why those words were helpful in solving the problem. We had some discussion in 6th grade about “good vs. bad” key words, and I encouraged them to think about what they were being given before trying to answer the questions. We found that in some examples, the information they needed to solve was already in the question, and no math was needed. |
Suggestions for AdaptationsCould it be easily adapted for a higher/lower grade? For a different subject area? For assessment? | Easily adaptable. I had to adapt it in order to use it for math. |
