Overview of Unit:
In this unit, students will be able to identify and describe their family members and other families. They will be able to apply this knowledge through writing and speaking activities.

Detailed Description:
Students preview the information by engaging in Quizlet on their own first before we previewed the content as a class using Quizlet Live.

Students were given a paper copy of the goal-setting document and asked to set a daily goal for the class period for what they will accomplish.

Detailed Description:
Students created their own video recording about their family in Spanish using iPads and or cellphones in class.

10 Minute Free Write Layout Example
Detailed Description:
After multiple days of CI instruction (daily and/or weekly), Choice Board Activities, and Los Parecidos Storytelling activities, students were given a prompt, “Describe My Family” or “Describe A Friend’s Family.” Students then had to complete a free write in 10 minutes to address either or both topics. In that period of time, students were not allowed to use their notes nor other resources to complete the task. This Free Write idea is from Tina Hargaden.

During Knowledge Deepening, the Content Area Skills required of the Learning Artifact are broken down into bite-sized tasks. A key goal is to provide some degree of choice over how students practice Content Area Skills.

Direct Instruction:
Detailed Description
Direct Instruction scaffolds the learning process for all students. A key goal is to incorporate BlendEd strategies to effectively differentiate instruction in order to maximize learning.
Learning Path:
The daily routine each day before the lesson begins consists of: Bellwork and Calendar (date, weather and activities), 40 minutes of direct instruction and 40 minutes of individual work time to deepen knowledge and skills about family. Although this unit is based on a block schedule, all activities and time frames can be adjusted.
