Lesson Description:
Students will use the Occupational Outlook Handbook to explore occupations related to child development and care. Students will create lapbooks to share their findings.
Learning Goals/Outcomes:
Students will be able to list occupations related to child development and care.
Students will be able to describe an occupation related to child development and care's duties, work environment, requirements, pay, and job outlook.

Introduction to Human Sciences/Family and Consumer Sciences Benchmark 4.1 Student will identify career field opportunities in the area of child development and care.
HSE.HS.2.11.c Summarize education and training requirements and opportunities for career paths in early childhood, education, and services.

- Access to projector and sound
- A paper copy of Child Development and Care Occupation Printer Friendly for each student or digital student access to Child Development and Care Occupation Digital
- Access to the Occupational Outlook Handbook website
- Paper or digital copies of Child Development and Care Lapbook
- One file folder per student
- Coloring utensils (crayons, pencils, markers, etc.)
- Access to a printer (optional)

Anticipatory Set/Pre-Activity:
Watch the "Elementary Education" video on the Nebraska Career Clusters Virtual Tours website. Discuss the relation of elementary education teachers to child development and care occupations. Brainstorm other occupations related to child development and care.

Activities (i.e. instructions, lesson, lab or project):
Activity 1:
- Provide a paper copy of Child Development and Care Occupation Printer Friendly for each student or digital student access to Child Development and Care Occupation Digital.
- Guide students to go to the Occupational Outlook Handbook website.
- Guide students to select a job related to child development and care to learn more about. Hint: Look for occupations in the Education, Training, and Library Occupations Group.
- Independently, have students learn more about the occupation they selected by looking through the different tabs. They should record their responses as they go. If their occupation does not have the information required below, take a screenshot of that tab and insert or email the teacher as proof.
Activity 2
- Provide paper or digital copies of Child Development and Care Lapbook.
- Explain the guidelines and expectations for the lapbooks.
- Fold file folders into lapbooks. Check out this "Creating a Lapbook" guide for more information.
- Provide students with coloring utensils and access to a printer, extra paper, scissors, and glue (optional) to create and decorate their lapbooks.
Closure:
Discuss the variety of child development and care occupations. Compare and contrast the occupations' duties, work environment, requirements, pay, and job outlook. Lapbooks could also be shared during class by having students present or creating a gallery walk.
