Teacher Planning:
Equipment/Materials Needed:
Cones & Speed ropes for dock (enough to go around whole gym), exercise cards (1 per rope), hula hoop with cord tied on (enough for each team of 2-3), Container for the “cooler” (could use tote/crate or hoop), Tennis Balls with specific letters written on them (as many as desired)
Time Required for Lesson:
30 minutes
Diagram/Setup:
Cones placed around outside of general space with a speed rope handle placed in top of each cone to create the "dock" boundary. Tape the exercise card to each speed rope between the cones. Tennis balls with letters written on them and some without placed inside the rope boundary (in the lake). "Cooler" is placed near the "Bait Shop".
Technology Use:
_____ YES ___x__NO
Instructional Plan:
Anticipatory Set/Pre-Activity:
Explain to the class they are responsible for taking care of their body and brain. "IF you're healthy, you'll be wealthy" and "Don't be lazy because your brain goes crazy". In the 2-3rd grade classes, introduce the 4 things it takes to build a healthy body and healthy brain: Exercise, Drink Water, Sleep, Eat Healthy Food. In the 4-5th grade classes, give guidelines for each of the 4 goals: Exercise - move your body everyday (60minutes minimum). Drink Water - urine color should be clear. Sleep - 8-10 hours each night, count back from wake up time. Eat Healthy Food - Avoid Sugar, go for Fruit Veggies and Protein.
Benefits/Explanation/Real-World Connection:
Introduces students to the responsibility they have to care for their body and brain. Provides 4 ways to build healthy body and healthy brain. Eat Healthy, Sleep, Exercise, Drink Water.
Activities (i.e. instructions, warm-up, lesson, cool-down):
Must “pay” to fish from the “dock” … 5 exercises shown on the card
Only fish caught in “net” with a symbol (number/letter) are “keepers”
Once you catch fish … take the fish around “dock” on the track to the bait shop and place in the “cooler”
Fish on the dock, out of the net, must go back in the lake.
A “Net” needing replaced or repaired must be taken care of at the “Bait Shop”, teacher ‘charges’ exercise ‘fee’ to repair/replace: 15-20 exercises: pushups-situps-burpees-mountain climbers-planks (30 sec count) teacher choice
BE aware of the “Game Warden” and “Bait Shop” owner! … exercise fees for following:
- Illegal fish removal (not in hoop with it on the floor),
- mistreatment of fish (thrown/tossed outside of lake),
- damage to the dock (knocked over without fixing)
- Once “fish” are in the “cooler” any team may begin trying to solve the puzzle on the board… HINT: 4 Things. Answers:
1. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 1. Eat Healthy Food
2. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 2. Exercise your Body
3. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 3. Sleep 8 to 10 hours
4. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 4. Drink Water
Closure:
Grades 2-3rd - bring class to the "huddle" and ask them to share any of the 4 things it takes to build healthy body and a healthy brain. Grade 4 - challenge them to solve the puzzle next time if they didn't complete it. Discuss what they did complete. Grade 5 - Discuss what they completed and see if they can solve without the tennis ball letters.
Assessment :
Completion of the puzzle 4-5th grade
Response to teacher closure question 2-3rd grade
(Formative/Summative)
